Was reading an article @ SmirkChimp about homeland security which induced me to land @ www.dhs.gov , the homeland security webpage.
Latest News:
August 13, 2006 – Effective immediately, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced an adjustment in the aviation threat level from RED to ORANGE for flights from the United Kingdom to the United States.
Hooray ! the threat level has been reduced from RED to ORANGE. "Man ! I was really tensed for the past few days with the RED threat level".Seriously, how many of us even bothers to know the threat level when we start our day . The color code is a brilliant scheme,I guess. Wonder what people with color blindness will do or people who cannot differntiate between orange and red....(kadi)
On a serious note, who is really getting benefitted. Hmm...I think it is the terrorists. Heard it through the grapevine that the day they were ready to blow up planes in UK, we were on YELLOW alert. What does YELLOW mean? -Elevated Risk but nothing too serious. The terrorists know we are not in high risk, and so will not be checked thoroughly and BHAM! . The terrorists can come up with their own definitions of the terror alerts.
GREEN(low risk) - You might pass through even with an AK47
BLUE(Gaurded Risk) - Be on your guard, dont carry the gels in the shoes, the guard at the gate can ask you to remove your shoes.
YELLOW(Elevated Risk) - Check out the airport, report the scenario to superiors before proceeding.
ORANGE(High Risk) - Going to the airport may not be a good idea. Those guys are in full alert.
RED(Severe Risk) - FORGET IT !!! Stay tuned till the color changes.

Sigh: When will we see a WHITE for Peace?
White for peace ? In US ?
Saumya, stop day-dreaming.
Those of us who watches Michael Moore's documentaries agree this is a tactic to scare people more than to serve useful purpose.
This should be used like an Emergency Alarm to activate people. Misusing it makes people immune to this colors.
Having said that, this may be effective code to keep Emergency officers on alert. And the side-effect as you rightly pointed out is take-it-easy attitude if the color is Green.
BTW, I hear only Orange & Red...where is Blue and Green?
Another article on the UK bomb threats by Craig Murray...

I think it is CYA (cover your ass) scheme. Look at it from a probabilistic case. At any point, you have only 5 levels of which 3 are bad. This means that the entire country should be on some kind of alert 70% of the days if the alerts changed randomly every day. So, assuming that there is no intelligence, still, the officials could claim that "WE TOLD YOU SO" even if they randomly toggled the colors.
I think it is like the car alarm. In reality, nobody knows the difference between the actual theft and a real one !
