Was browsing rediff when I came across the news that TN , aka Karunanidhi has passed a law allotting reservation quota for muslims and christians.
TN announces 30% quota for minorities
This infuriated me as I have been a victim of the so called quotas. If my assumption is right, the introduction of reservation for the supposedly lower caste came about because of their unaffordability for higher studies,job applications etc. But, all these at what cost ? Is it worth it to fill jobs , schools with less qualified people.
There was a phase in my life when I was prejudiced against BCs, MBCs etc.Being immature, and struggling to get into good colleges, it made me very angry to see less qualified students grabbing the good seats. I can vividly remember one particular parent stating that I should have been an OBC , when he was gloating over the fact that his daughter had got a seat in REC,Trichy with atleast 40 points less than me. It made me wonder as to whether I was the victim of a caste system. With the current caste system in India, I think the so called forward communities are the victims. What the hell were they thinking when they named that caste as a forward caste?.What is TN achieving by reserving seats for muslims? . Instead the govt can concentrate on having a different fee structure based on family income and totally get rid of the caste allocation.
I wish other states could follow UP in this regard. Kudos to UP HC , where the judge pronounced that Muslims should not be considered minorities at all. How cool is that?
And some educated guys, IITians , have floated a party in UP.

I have been a victim of reservation too... I think most forward caste people are naturally against it... In today's world, I think it is sheer stupidity to allow such discounts....
I hope this IIT party in UP doesnt share the same destiny as the one which was started in TN (Lok Paritran, which got 34K votes in 2006 election). It split just after the election.

I think any one who has not benefitted from this daft system hates it.
I am all out for economic reservation - prove that your family's annual income is less than 'x' amount, and fee should be waived by law (Mind you : scores wise you have to score enough to compete, but the fee alone is waived) That will truly help downtrodden folks come up.
But both caste and religion based reservation is medieval.
Like most of problems in India this is sprialling out.
Idea in principle (when created) is sound. But our politicians use this to keep their vote banks.
Though I was not greatly affected (because, no-caste employee quota got me the seat), I can understand the pain of people outscoring others only to find that it is not good enough.
BCs are in no better shape now because most of the country is in that bucket. And it will get worse in general.
I would vote for small percentage of caste based quota for fixed time (another 10-20 years) and another percentage for economically down people. And keeping rest open and scrapping this BC/MBC etc. which is big joke
The underlying assumption that "backward class" has insufficient opportunity is majorly wrong. the solution will be like survivor pointed out different fee structures, scholarships and the like. If at all opportunity is to be provided, it is to be provided at a much younger age, to promote solid education during primary and secondary schools. But this needs thinking about the future, not the immediate future, but the long term. Political shortsightedness stands in the way of this sort of thinking. I wonder whether there has been any survey on whether people will be happy to exchange reservation for better schooling.
