What are your expectations of an ideal work-spot/ professional environment?
Top criteria for me would include:
Challenging work (Just the right amount too!)
Ownership
Good Team
Good Manager
Flexibility
Proximity to home (The last two for work/life balance)

What about money...;)...
To me, "fairness" to employees would be the number one thing in the "ideal" list... When fairness ceases to exist, it doesn't matter how good the nature of work is, it won't be a happy place to work for.
Proximity would be good too...I hate to start at 9:20 in the morning to reach office at 9:30..;)...
Ada paavi....don't get me started on this. Thanks to Bart maintenance, these days, I leave home at 7 to reach here at 8:45!
As for money, though it is important, I prefer a peaceful atmosphere with less money than a stressful atmosphere with more money - that is just me.

You have touched upon an interesting topic on the work conditions...
First of all, I think we were talking about "ideal" conditions. Ideally, wouldn't we want the most money from a work place? In the big picture, isn't that the main reason why we all go to work?
That said, in reality, I wouldn't and couldn't work for money if the place is highly stressful. At the same time, I like to think of peace and other extra factors to be added benefits on top of money. All the factors about work environment are added benefits which make us more productive. With the money being equal, we all would definitely choose a place which satisfies us the most. But, if there are significant differences in money, can we say that we will still stick to our tastes and preferences...
Looking at it from a company's perspective, if a company want their employees to be highly productive, they better provide a conducive environment. If a company operates in high stress mode all the time, they obviously cannot sustain the momentum in long-term... The corollary to that is, if a company is highly stressful and they dont offer significantly large money when compared to their competitors, they will fail...

1. Commute
2. Challenging work
3. Money
Having worked with different kinds of bosses, I feel I would be happy only if I don't have to report to anybody.:-) So, till that day, I will just go ahead with the flow.
For me the top factors in order of preference would be
a) Challenging work environment and freedom to choose what one wants to do
b) Zero bureaucracy and paper pushing (wishful thinking)
c) Totally flexible working hours (no 9 to 5 plzzzz)
d) Good colleagues to share and discuss ideas
e) No BOSS. No Rules. No Regulations.
