A widget is an application you can easily stick to your own blog page - it is a small window that has been programmed to show you what you want. Check out the Dilbert widget on my blog. The dilbert widget is free for downloading now, and is available in various sizes from http://widget.dilbert.com/
How cool is that?!

Certainly looks cool. Supplying more and more widgets is a sure shot way to make your site popular.
@ Saumya:Widget reminds of my first graduate class in economics...i was new to the US (about a week in) and I attend my first class and the guy starts talking about making widgets and economics...i'm kind of confused and it was a difficult 2 hrs...well I could have asked somebody else, but pride comes with a price...thanks to google, my torture lasted just 2 hrs an 10 mins (time to get back to the computer)...
@ Saumya,
After a very long period, I visited dilbert blog just this morning and chanced upon this widget. A sure cool thing...
@saumya: The meaning of a widget actually depends on the context.
I have seen this term being used in the X window system for a long time, probably from its conception (X window's conception) which is sometime in 1980, where it applied to any object in the gui- like a radio button or a scroll bar.
A web widget is the term overloaded with the meaning you are talking about.
And ofcourse from Madmax, we see that economics has its own overloading.
Manu...thanks for the clarification. Here is wiki's take on it:

Apparently, there are beer widgets too :)
@saumya: You think i wouldn't know about the beer widget? I just didn't mention it- to escape a morai from you :)
for someone like me who gets excited with rss feeds, this technology is beyond comprehension..;)
looks pretty cool though !! One day, I will learn it...
